Hey Parents,

Can I ask you a personal question?

What are you good at? I mean really good at?

How did you get good at it? Why did you want to be good in the first place?

A common question I’ve been asked by parents about their young children in the past is, “are they any good?”

If we even consider answering this, it’s probably important to align on exactly what a 4-year-old needs to be good at?

From the day they are born, a child’s superpower is their incredible ability to learn. The speed at which they do so is literally mind-blowing. In their early years, their developmental curve is exponential. So, at what point can we honestly expect them to be ‘good’ at anything?!

If you build a house, you spend a lot of time on the foundations. Digging holes and pouring concrete isn’t pretty and can get messy but needs to be done properly to allow us to build. Fixtures and fittings logically come at the end.

Is there any reason then why such logical steps seem to be ignored when it comes to kids’ sports? Why do we expect them to be ‘good’ at games that are ultimately created for adults? Why are we laying bricks with no foundations?

To help build the strongest foundations let’s focus on physical literacy, fundamental movement skills and fun. Let’s enjoy watching our kids do what they’re good at – learning.

They’ll decide how they decorate their house when they’re ready!

Finding Our ‘Why’ For Getting Active https://getsetgokids.com/finding-our-why-for-getting-active/ https://getsetgokids.com/finding-our-why-for-getting-active/#respond Sat, 01 Jun 2024 06:53:00 +0000 https://getsetgokids.com/?p=472 Let’s connect with movement

Hey Parents,

Sitting comfortably?

It’s time to talk about our feelings.

Let’s get deep and explore our relationship with movement.

Physical literacy refers to how positive and meaningful our relationship with movement and physical activity is.

It’s our commitment to movement and physical activity. It is our ‘WHY’ of being active.

Why we choose to be active is an accumulation of all our previous experiences of physical activity. Unsurprisingly, the more positive experiences we have ie those that offer enjoyment, value and meaning, the more we will be encouraged to be active in the future.

The same applies to our children.

Here’s 3 ways we can help them find their ‘WHY’?

  1. Don’t neglect quality for quantity – one good club that meets their needs is better than lots of clubs that just keep them busy.
  2. Find activities that build strong connections because they are fun! If they’re not smiling, they’re probably in the wrong place.
  3. Choose activities that make them feel good because they are appropriate to them. These might be different to those that make you feel good watching them.

Finally ask yourself this, are they dragging you to sessions or are you dragging them?

Importance Of Physical Literacy From A 4-Year Old https://getsetgokids.com/importance-of-physical-literacy-from-a-4-year-old/ https://getsetgokids.com/importance-of-physical-literacy-from-a-4-year-old/#respond Wed, 01 May 2024 06:55:00 +0000 https://getsetgokids.com/?p=475 We need to talk!

Dear Mum & Dad,

We need to talk!

I’m growing up quickly and we only have a few years to make sure I can do things like run, jump, balance, throw and catch – it’s something called physical literacy!

I need you to help me as early as possible so I can play all kinds of games when I’m older.

I really want to be good at moving so I can play with my friends and build my confidence.

Being active is fun but I’m worried if I don’t learn these basic skills now, I might just give up.

I might never discover what I could have been good at and end up playing on my device instead.

Get Set Go Kids are experts on physical literacy. They teach lots of important skills and play different sports every week!

Shall we try a free trial session – it sounds fun!

Love from your future sports star

Xxx

How to unlock the ABC’s of physical literacy https://getsetgokids.com/how-to-unlock-the-abcs-of-physical-literacy/ https://getsetgokids.com/how-to-unlock-the-abcs-of-physical-literacy/#respond Mon, 01 Apr 2024 06:57:00 +0000 https://getsetgokids.com/?p=477 When your child learns to read, they unlock a magical world of limitless stories and knowledge. The process of learning such a life changing skill involves distinct phases, each appropriate to your child’s age and stage of development. Just as we ignite a lifelong love for reading, let’s see how we can introduce our kids to discover a passion for sport and movement.

  1. PICTURE PLAY

Young children, like early readers, explore the world of movement through play. Running, jumping, and rolling are their picture books. These simple, yet essential skills form the foundation of physical literacy.

  • ALPHABET MOVES

Just as letters combine to form words, basic movements link to develop balance, agility, coordination, and fundamental skills. Simple games like tag form their first vocabulary.

  • PHONICS & FUNDAMENTALS

Phonics form the building blocks of language. Fundamental sports skills and principles begin to unlock the foundations of sport. These skills are refined and can be applied to specific activities.

  • ACTIVITY LIBRARY

With foundations in place, children can make choices on the genre of book or type of sport they enjoy most. They can also confidently apply their skills and explore a whole range of sports to find their passion.

  • SPORTS LITERATURE

Like delving into complex literature, strong physical literacy skills provide the confidence and motivation to participate and engage in specific sports, join teams, or play competitively.

To conclude, we would never consider giving our young readers a classic novel as they start learning to read, so should offer the same support as they master their physical literacy and movement skills. Expecting your child to step straight into organized sport is unrealistic.

Let’s build strong foundations and empower our children with the keys to unlock the exciting world of sport for a brighter, healthier future.

What’s the best sports academy for your child? https://getsetgokids.com/whats-the-best-sports-academy-for-your-child/ https://getsetgokids.com/whats-the-best-sports-academy-for-your-child/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2024 05:37:00 +0000 https://getsetgokids.com/?p=523 3 red flags you need to avoid

Hey Parents,

So, it’s time to start exploring your kids interests and talents. If sport is on your agenda, you’ll quickly find the kids sports academy market is overwhelming. With literally hundreds of options, it’s important to understand not all are created equal.

To help you make the right choice in finding a place where your child can develop their passion and skills, here’s 3 potential red flags you should be aware of…

  1. AGE-APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM

Young children have unique physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. They are busy developing basic motor skills, coordination, and social skills. Choose a program that understands these developmental stages and has a curriculum to fit.

Flag with solid fillKids aren’t mini adults. Programs should be developed specifically for your child’s developmental needs. Look for programs that focus on basic motor skill development, fun and engaging activities, and age-appropriate instruction.

  • QUALIFIED COACHES

Coaches working with young children should be able to connect, engage and inspire. Qualifications don’t always mean quality but look for coaches that have expertise in early years development, as well as sports knowledge.

Flag with solid fillA poor coach could put your child off activity for good. Look for personality, temperament, and empathy along with qualifications and experience at this age group. A great coach can have considerable impact on your child’s future participation!

  • EMPHASIS ON FUN AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT

At this young age, all emphasis should be on encouraging a love for sports and physical activity. Look for programs that focus on skill development through fun games. Participation should always come before performance.

Flag with solid fillSports academies that use terms like ‘elite’ at this age group should be avoided. ‘Winning’ shouldn’t be in our vocabulary yet. Sport at all levels should be fun. If your child isn’t smiling when they play, you’re in the wrong place…

Avoid these red flags to ensure your child’s first experiences of sport are positive and enjoyable. The power of sport and play on their physical, social and emotional development is huge.
